Both games run on the same engine — and release dates were within about two years of one another —, but the games are fundamentally different. As a kid, Ocarina of Time was relatively creepy, but Majora’s Mask was terrifying. Majora’s Mask seemed like it was tedious at times, but Ocarina of Time was much more linear.
Additionally, the constant wait for the dramatic effects of putting on masks on Majora’s Mask did grow boring over time. Ocarina of Time did have the reliance on the ocarina, but I found myself enjoying the soundtrack so much that playing a song usually just meant I got to hear another song I enjoyed. The music to Majora’s Mask, however, just gives me the chills — and I still can not figure out whether or not that means it is great, too, or not.
For a kid or anyone who is easily scared, Ocarina of Time is much better simply due to there being fewer terrifying characters and a more hand-holding, linear storyline, but Majora’s Mask does have that certain characteristic that makes a game memorable and one-of-a-kind. Majora’s Mask is most definitely the more inventive of the two titles, but the question is whether or not that means it’s the better of the two. Creativity is definitely on Majora’s Mask’s side, but a nice easy-to-follow RPG is more along the lines of Ocarina of Time. The comparison, the argument about which does what better, is close to endless. So without further ado, here is my breakdown of which one is best.
Majora’s Mask definitely excels in both story and atmosphere. From its dark, gloomy colors to its sad quest stories, this game is exceedingly proficient at creating a surreal, dark atmosphere. Having read some of the speculations into some more subtle details that are hinted at and given in the game, I can vouch that this game has a much better story than the slightly generic Ocarina of Time. Oh, and the moon. That moon just seals the deal.
Ocarina of Time is by far much more likely my choice for picking up and playing again. Majora’s Mask is a great game and all, but collecting the masks and resetting time 24/7 makes the Water Temple look like nothing. Simply put, Ocarina of Time’s story just allows the player to run through it countless times while Majora’s Mask is much less linear. Also, playing through the same day over and over kind of feels like Majora’s Mask is being replayed before it has even been beat the first time.
Both of these games were games I was quite familiar with as a kid, but I’d have to say that both of them are memorable in their own ways. Majora’s Mask was known for its odd masks and the creepy mood that it set while Ocarina of TIme was considered more of an adventure than an apocalypse. Ocarina of Time makes me want to go out and by myself an ocarina to play on, but Majora’s Mask does not really encourage me to go buy a mask. Due to that, I’d say that Ocarina of Time has the advantage here, but that they both shall continue to remain equal.
To each their own. Yeah, I went there. My choice would actually probably go to Majora’s Mask due to some of the hidden, dark happenings being rather covert, yet there for the naked eye to see.. Ocarina of Time has the whole time controlling gimmick going for it, but I never really feel like I am involved in the story as much as I am about an apocalyptic moon with a creepy face. To many of the fanboys, it is nearly a crime to speak out against Ocarina of Time propaganda. In regards to the new remake coming to the 3DS, I’m excited for Majora’s Mask, but I just hope they capture the same essence it caught for me so long ago. The release date for Majora’s Mask 3D is slated for Q1/Q2 of 2015 globally and is coming to (you guessed it) Nintendo 3DS.
