When building a controller the first thing you should focus on is how tactile the controller feels in your hands. While we are not fans of Microsoft's Xbox One controller, the Stratus XL manages to feel even better in use. Each button is responsive as the next and we didn't have any issues using the controller in some of our favorite games. The Stratus also never seems to feel too heavy or uncomfortable for long periods of use. Unlike when using the Steam controller, we never experienced any cramped hands or muscles.
Now here's what makes the Stratus so great, imagine one controller that you can use for your mobile devices and your PC. While we initially had issues getting the controller to sync properly, we managed to get it up and running within a few minutes of troubleshooting. Testing on our various Android tablets and devices was flawless. If you're a gamer that is always on the go with their mobile device, this controller may be your best bet.
Like other SteelSeries devices before it the Stratus XL is completely customizable thanks to the SteelSeries Engine 3 application. As always, we are impressed with the level of customization offered. Everything is covered from the sensitivity of your analog sticks to how hard you have to press the triggers to register an input. As a nice bonus we also have to mention how lightweight the application handled on our android devices. It was easy to run in the background and did not require much battery to keep running.
As for the negatives, while there are few, they really hold the controller back from being perfect. The Stratus XL requires you to already have a standard Bluetooth adapter as it does not come included. This was not a problem for us as our devices are all Bluetooth enabled, but we know not every one has that luxary. The detail which left us wondering why SteelSeries did this is, there is no room for a standard USB plugin. When using the Stratus you will have to purchase your own set of AA batteries. Even with batteries our controller lasted nearly 40 hours before requiring a recharge. This is also a fixable issue if you have purchased rechargeable AA batteries in the past.
Bottom line: While we primarily use Sony's Dualshock 4 as our controller of choice for the PC, the Stratus XL is an extremely close second and manages to be the best Android controller available. It's a no-brainer to recommend this controller to PC and Android gamers everywhere.
We here at Game Rampage give the SteelSeries Stratus XL an 8/10. Pick one up here!
