While Sony and Nintendo managed to hold out until this generation before they started charging users for online services, you can't deny the thought of free money from each userbase.
Since Microsoft has shown the world gamers are willing to pay to experience their games online, Sony and Nintendo now see this as free money, just waiting to be collected.
For most users online services would be enough, however since these companies are charging their users they feel they must go out of their way to offer "free downloadable titles" or in Nintendo's case, "rentals".
These "extra features" are padding to a service that should be free, since you know, you already pay a fee to your internet company to get the service. After all, PC gamers have no online fee to their games, why should console users have to pay the price?
