1. Get to know how Charizards normal moves work.
Charizard has a few deceiving normal moves. First is Charizards Nair or neutral air. Charizard spins his tail around the front body in a half circle. This move while not the fastest is very active hit box and lasts a long time. This is good for catching your opponent off guard when coming back to the ledge or from getting knocked back. Next up is Charizards jab, with 3 hits and a massive range it is the go-to for up closes exchanges. Charizards back air is also great for catching your opponent off guard. While unsafe if shielded, it can kill at around 110% range so it's good to sneak it in. Charizards dash attack is great at punishing unsafe moves. Charizards jumping slash is fast, so it's best use is catching jumping opponents. Charizards tilts are not that great and don't have many uses due to their poor hitboxes. Lastly Charizard also has a spike that if spaced properly can be deadly. Overall, Charizard has a great amount of normal moves that more than do the job!
2. Mastering Charizards Smash Attacks
Charizards smash attacks all have fantastic range and are easy to hit with. Charizards Up Smash and Down Smash his most versatile smash attacks. Up Smash can be used in combos , anti airing opponents on the ground and to set up a kill with Fly. Down Smash is best used to punish rolls and to edgeguard. Charizards Side Smash hits just as hard as other heavy hitters and has a faster startup to boot. It is best used to punish attacks with a lot of recovery.
3. Use Charizards Super Armor Properly
A ton of Charizards moves have super armor and will always win trades if used correctly. Charizards moves that have super armor are his Down B or Rock Smash, Side B or Flare Blitz and Up B or Fly. Rock Smash is a fully super armored move meaning it will never be interrupted. This move is great when fighting aggressive opponents who like to push buttons. Flare Blitz damages yourself and it's vulnerable during start up ,but after that it flys through anything. Flare Blitz is great for punishing people who run away and spam projectiles as it goes right through them. Fly also has full super armor and can challenge any aerial move your opponent throws out. If properly spaced , it can kill off the top at around 80%. Charizards super armor is his biggest strength and makes him a worthy foe to any opponent!
4. Learn How To Properly Recover
Charizards recovery at first look is not good. You get his double jump and Up B or Fly , and you can't come back from much. At first I thought this was Charizards biggest weakness. After fooling around in training mode , I discovered if you use Flare Blitz against a stage wall you bounce off of it letting you use Fly. This means that while costing some health Charizard should always be able to recover. Since Fly has super armor, you can use it when fighting your opponents off stage. If timed right Charizard can never be spiked. There were times I used fly to avoid my opponents spike leaving them open for mine and a victory.
6. Know Charizards Weaknesses
Due to Charizards aggressive play style, counter characters give him some trouble. Make sure to bait out counters before rushing in head first. Charizards air mobility is lacking compared to his amazing ground movement. Lastly Charizards attacks Fly and Flareblitz have a small learning curve, so it's going to take some practice to master those moves.
Overall Charizard is a fun and powerful character that every one should play. Once mastered Charizard is an unstoppable force!
